BnW Spots

BnW Spots

Use BnW Spots to create organic black-and-white spot patterns with multi-layer stacking. The algorithm places spots at jittered grid positions across multiple layers with randomized sizes. Scale controls overall density, Disorder adds positional randomness, Roughness controls edge softness, and Layers determines how many stacked spot layers are multiplied together. Supports multichannel output for independent RGB spot patterns.

Availability

This node requires Pro.

Common uses

  • Scale controls the grid density (1 = coarse, 8 = fine).
  • Disorder adds randomness to spot positions within each cell.
  • Roughness controls the edge falloff of spots (0 = hard, 1 = normal, 2 = very soft).
  • Layers stacks multiple spot layers at different scales for richer patterns.
  • Invert flips black and white.
  • Multichannel produces independent RGB spot patterns.

Input ports

  • None

  • No external image input required; parameters and seed control output.

Output ports

  • out

  • Outputs grayscale or multichannel noise depending on node settings.

Behavior

  • BnW Spots is deterministic for a given seed and parameter set.
  • Each layer independently places spots at jittered grid positions.
  • Layers are combined via multiplicative blending (dark spots accumulate).
  • RGB multichannel uses three independent seed offsets for varied patterns per channel.

Common mistakes

  • Very high scale with many layers may produce dense, nearly solid output.
  • Low roughness with high disorder may create overlapping hard-edged spots.
