Simplex Noise
Simplex Noise
Use Simplex Noise when you need smooth noise with better isotropy than Perlin. Simplex noise has fewer directional artifacts and is well-suited for terrain, cloud, and flow-like procedural textures where directional bias would be visible.
Availability
This node requires Pro.
Common uses
- Use low-frequency noise for broad breakup and high-frequency noise for detail.
- Drive distortion, blend masks, or thresholding with noise outputs.
Input ports
-
None
-
No external image input required; parameters and seed control output.
Output ports
-
out -
Outputs grayscale or multichannel noise depending on node settings.
Parameters
| Parameter | Type | Default | Range or values |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | int | 8 | 1 to 128 |
| Seed | int | 12345 | 0 to 65535 |
| Disorder | float | 0 | 0 to 1 |
| Multichannel | bool | false | - |
| Non-Square Expansion | bool | true | - |
Behavior
- Noise nodes are deterministic for a given seed and parameter set.
- Simplex noise uses a skewing grid to produce fewer directional artifacts than Perlin.
- Disorder animates the underlying noise ingredients on a perfect loop, so 1.0 returns to the same result as 0.0.
Common mistakes
- Very high frequency values can alias at lower output resolutions.
- When using seed-heavy graphs, keep seed strategy organized for reproducibility.
